The Nutrition in Agriculture is established in the State Department of Agriculture. The unit has overall role of developing policies and strategies of integrating nutrition into agricultural value chains through the following approaches: Promotion of diversification of crops production, animal husbandry and fisheries; Diet diversification; nutrition education; food preservation and processing; non-food approaches that impact on nutrition such as dissemination of gender-friendly technologies that reduced time and work burden.
The unit also develops guidelines and participates in reviews of food and nutrition security policies, strategies and guidelines in consultation with other stakeholders. Among its many functions is capacity building and technical support to service providers in relation to nutrition sensitive technologies and strengthened nutrition linkages. It is the department’s focal point of Scaling Up nutrition (SUN); to which Kenya is signatory to. The unit also coordinates development and dissemination of technical materials on Nutrition in Agriculture. Through collaboration with stakeholders, the unit establishes and maintains database of appropriate nutrition sensitive agricultural technologies.
